QUICK SOURDOUGH BREAD

This is a family favorite and you don't have to worry about Sourdough Starters! Of course, checking the dough within the first five minutes of kneading and adding 1 tbsp of flour or liquid for adjustments, if necessary, is the best way to make sure the dough will make great bread!

*I measure the ingredients exactly as listed*

    • 3 cups sifted bread flour
    • 2 3/4 tsp of yeast, or one package*
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 2 tsp sugar
    • 3 tbls butter or margarine**
    • 1 tbls oil
    • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
    • 2 tsp lemon juice
    • 2/3 cup water***

If using a bread machine, mix and bake according to white bread directions. If using oven then mix all ingredients in a mixer and let rise at least twice. Bake at 375°F for 40 minutes.

* I don't think that this is the amount that one package has...I usually buy the yeast in jars (bread machine yeast) and measure it.  (back)

**can use butter-flavored Crisco.  (back)

*** the original recipe was too dry and didn't even form a ball, so I added water to it 1 Tab at a time and ended up with this amount for the perfect loaf. Remember that humidity or heat can make the dough too sticky or dry so check the dough and add flour or water, 1 tab at a time until the dough doesn't stick to the container and forms a uniform ball.  (back)
